Bilingual vocabulary development is the key to academic success. However, a student’s vocabulary is not developed instantaneously. The refinement of his unique form of expression occurs steadily as he ventures into uncharted territory, and words, in their own dichotomy, become the petals of a flower or the blade of a sword. Language can bring about in human beings their most cherished dreams as well as their most unsettling fears. Unquestionably, one of the primordial traits in the Bilingual classroom is the consistent implementation of a strong Spanish language foundation that will in due course facilitate the final transition of the student into English, thus achieving biliteracy.

Innovative and abundant of Latino passion & heritage, these conscientiously redacted reading passages are the foundation upon which solid Bilingual instruction can be edified. Since 1996, Mr. Boitel has assisted numerous elementary and secondary schools by providing instructional support in the classroom while modeling teaching strategies and methods that have propelled many a student to excel in Bilingual/ESL reading & writing endeavors. Moreover, the alluded passages were written with the intent of exposing students to the inalienable rights comprised within our magnificent U.S. Constitution.In 2015, Mr. Boitel will celebrate 42 years of residence in the Lone Star State.

 THE ROOM (remnants of an optical illusion)

     If the echo of the wind could have penetrated the glass window, then the room would have been suitable for the inspiration-thirsty bohemian nomad, the eternally anguishing poet who ardently sought his elusive muse. But the room was not fashioned by the wind, for it was eroded by the force of time; its dilapidated walls washed away by the unrelenting passing of the calendar years. As I sat silently in my chair, I looked at the clock strategically placed on the main wall and its ticking began to unveil the secrets of the speed of time. Minute after minute, the seemingly slow hands marked a new instant of existence.

 


     This particular room was different. Peculiar things took place at odd hours. Sometimes at noon, the sun rays illuminated the cubicle projecting a reflection of shadows, a fatuous dance of lights built by a mythical force; a spirited instant of being inexorably attached to the passing of time.

 


     Somehow, a sense of pervasive mistrust permeated through the ambiance of the domain, for this room was the territorial claim of the bewildering shadows formed by the nurturing sun. After all, the walls concealed the echo of the ticking of the clock, and the almost empty room could only share its loneliness with the sporadic shadows that appeared and succumbed without leaving any trace. As the day progressed, the apparently slow-paced hands of the clock on the wall continued to carry time one leap forward. I felt restless as the time-decayed ceiling looked upon me while I wrote down my reflections.  The emptiness of the habitat encircled me, and the sensation was unsettling. But then at night, the essence of the moon came upon my window, and I could see, far away into the distance, how the intermittent glittering stars emanated a strange light that transformed my room into a phantasmagoric place, a place unknown to others but very close to my innermost fears.

 


     Once more, I looked at the clock, and the bewitching hour had arrived. Now, the incessant ticking of the timepiece disturbed my concentration. With vivid apprehension, I turned my head towards an almost naked wall. This time, an ominous band of dancing imaginary figurines smiled at me with a secret smile, and worst of all, they were not caused by the refraction of the sunlight. I closed my eyes, hoping that the vision somehow would go away. I experienced tremendous fear, and the fast palpitations of my heart were overpowered by the dominating ticking of the clock. I opened my eyes, and the suspended animations on the wall had ceased to exist. I felt asleep as the hours, inexplicably attached to the unreal world, abandoned my room and surreptitiously slipped away.

Francesco caminó cabizbajo, aplastando con sus decididas pisadas las hojas secas, hundiendo con ambos pies el manto amarillo que cubría los senderos  del parque. Sin premura, dotado de esa parsimonia que irremediablemente aqueja a los adolescentes, el niño alzó la vista y sus ojos confundieron una y otra vez las huidizas sombras de las esqueléticas siluetas de los árboles, sombras danzarinas que se filtraban entre las torcidas ramas, proyectándose en el ocre lienzo del mullido y marchito suelo……..

Escribo desde el silencio. Oculto, casi inexistente, el pasado me arrastra a evocar y cuando evoco, sueño. Quizás nunca sabré porqué las horas marchitas se suceden y al sucederse nos conducen a vivir, pero vivimos. Y vivir no equivale  a olvidar, ya que aquel que olvida reincide en sus errores; sucumbe ante el fatalismo innato que todos poseemos. Postergar lo inevitable es incomprensible; todos somos cautivos del reino ingrávido de las memorias, de la nostálgica presencia de frescas vivencias ahora sepultadas bajo un manto de años, de formidables triunfos y decepcionantes fracasos.
